THIERRY BREUIL'S MENTAL PREPARATION FOR A RACE

The brain plays a very important role in attaining a sporting objective: in many cases, it will be your mental strength that will drive you to surpass yourself. Thierry Breuil, an experienced trail runner, reveals his secrets for pushing your physical capacities to the limit and dramatically improving your performance.

PREPARING FOR MY RACE

First of all, my preparation for all my races is meticulous: planning the fuelling points, the distance between them, the contents of my bag, the nutrition prior to the race, etc. Nothing is left to chance in order to give myself every opportunity to succeed and focus on my race with peace of mind.

Having studied the profile of the race, I complete my final training sessions while calling to mind all the information that I have been able to glean and my preparations: the weather forecast for the day of the race, the start time, what I will eat for breakfast, etc. In short, all the information that will have a bearing on the race.

THINKING POSITIVE

When the day of the race finally arrives. During the race, you must mentally persuade yourself that you are in good shape and everything is going well. I encourage myself internally while trying to relax and bring to mind any feeling that is positive (e.g. muscular). I also focus on happy thoughts: the feeling of achieving a great performance, my loved ones, etc.

KEEPING THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE

When the race becomes difficult, I start by persuading myself that I can still ask more of my body, despite the pain. I tell myself that it is my mental strength that will get me to overcome the difficulties and that a few minutes or kilometres of suffering is nothing compared to an entire life. For me, everything is a question of putting things in perspective: how does the pain of a specific moment in time compare with the pleasure of winning a race or simply attaining one's objective? The pain is forgotten all the more quickly when your performance is crowned with success!

THINKING ABOUT YOUR LOVE ONES

Some people run for themselves, while others, like me, run for other people. What I mean by this is that, by winning a race, I will make other people happy and that will make me happy in return.

I imagine the joy of my loved ones and my daughters and that helps me to dig deep, keep on fighting and continue to run without giving up anything.

FINDING MY MOTIVATION

Naturally, every runner is different. It is important to have a good understanding of your own abilities and get to know the images, ideas and motivations on which you can focus your attention to help you like a lifebuoy in order to go further. They must block out everything else so that your thoughts dwell only on the best aspects of the race!
